Annabelle, the Doll Locked in a Case

Annabelle is a Raggedy Ann doll that the Warrens said was demonic. Her legend rests on their word, and in 2025 a comedian became guardian of the collection that holds her.

Annabelle is the best-known haunted object in America, and the film series built on her has made her face familiar worldwide. The doll behind the legend is a plain Raggedy Ann, not the porcelain figure of the films, and the story that surrounds her has almost no support beyond the word of the people who told it.

The Horror

The account comes from Ed and Lorraine Warren, paranormal investigators who ran an Occult Museum at their home in Monroe, Connecticut. In their telling, a student nurse named Donna from Hartford was given the doll in the 1970s and found that it moved on its own and behaved maliciously. A medium is said to have told Donna and her roommate that the spirit of a dead seven-year-old girl named Annabelle had taken it over. The Warrens said the doll was in fact demonic, took it away, and placed it in a display box at the museum.

Later claims, such as a priest’s car hitting a tree and a detective being stabbed, rest on Ed Warren’s accounts alone. Academics and science writers treat the story as a modern legend with no corroborating evidence. As one sceptic, Sharon A. Hill, put it, “We have nothing but Ed’s word.” Joseph Laycock has suggested the demonic-doll idea may owe something to Robert the Doll and to the Twilight Zone episode “Living Doll”.

In July 2025 Dan Rivera, host of a touring exhibition that carried the doll, died unexpectedly in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Police reportedly found nothing unusual at the scene. The estate said the doll was never missing from the tour, after online reports claimed it had disappeared. The online talk of a curse is not supported by any evidence.

The Modern Relic

The Occult Museum closed to the public in 2019 over zoning violations. In late July 2025 the comedian Matt Rife and the YouTube creator Elton Castee acquired the Warrens’ former home and museum in Monroe, and became legal guardians of the collection for the next five years. Rife said he planned tours and overnight stays at the property. That the museum has reopened is unconfirmed, and nothing here shows that Annabelle can be seen there.

A different haunted doll can be visited. Robert the Doll has been at the East Martello Museum in Key West, Florida since 1994. The doll is said to have been made by Steiff and bought in 1904, though that is reported rather than proven. Local folklore says visitors who show it disrespect suffer misfortune afterwards.
